NEW HAMPTON — Thomas Gerald “Tom” Tierney, 84, of New Hampton, died Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2026, at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory, 101 West Main Street in New Hampton. A rosary will be held at the funeral home at 4:00 p.m.
A parish Scripture service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 206 North Broadway in New Hampton.
Visitation will continue for one hour before the Memorial Mass at the church on Tuesday.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Chris Podhajsky from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Inurnment will follow at 11:15 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, 726 North Pleasant Hill in New Hampton.
Tom was born June 13, 1942, in New Hampton to Roy and Catherine Franzen Tierney. He grew up in the New Hampton area, where he developed the strong work ethic and commitment to family that guided him throughout his life.
He served his country in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge. Upon returning home, Tom established a life rooted in family, work and community.
Tom met Judy Troyna at a dance at Chip’s Ballroom in Lawler. Their meeting began a lifelong partnership, and they were married September 17, 1966, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia.
For more than 20 years, Tom worked at Oliver and White Farm. He later drove a truck for David Kurk and spent many years hauling raw materials before retiring in 2007.
Retirement did not keep Tom from working. He remained active by working for the cooperative and driving the Chickasaw Chassis. He took pride in an honest day’s labor and earned a reputation as a dependable man who could be counted on to finish the job.
When he was not working, Tom enjoyed playing cards and spending time on his front porch. Friends and relatives gathered there to visit, exchange stories and discuss nearly anything. The porch became a welcoming place where conversations flowed and lasting family memories were created.
Tom was known for his kindness, quiet strength and willingness to lend a hand. He showed his affection through thoughtful gestures, steady support and well-timed jokes that made those around him feel welcome and appreciated.
His legacy remains in the family he helped raise, the work he completed and the many people touched by his friendship and generosity.
Tom is survived by his wife, Judy Tierney of New Hampton; sons, Kevin and Wanda Tierney of Charles City and Mike Tierney and Amanda Mallinger of Des Moines; daughter, Jada Tierney and Lori McFarland of Waterloo; brother, Jim and Georgia Tierney of Waterloo; and sister, Betty and Gerald Gleason of Waterloo.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Julia Hanson, Rory and Jessica Tierney, Rebecca and Wyatt Hambly and Ian Tierney; and great-grandchildren, Patrick and Quincy Tierney.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Isiah Tierney; brothers, Francis Franzen and Joseph “Arnie” Tierney; and sister, Teresa Anderson.
