
FORT DODGE — A man died after he was shot Friday afternoon in a Fort Dodge neighborhood, and police detained a second man identified as the alleged shooter at the scene.
The Webster County Telecommunications Center received a report at approximately 1:52 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2026, that a man had been shot in the 1300 block of Third Avenue North in Fort Dodge.
Fort Dodge police officers arrived and found an adult man suffering from a single gunshot wound. Officers provided emergency assistance until members of the Fort Dodge Fire Department reached the scene.
The victim was transported to UnityPoint Health-Trinity Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities had not released the victim’s name Saturday morning as officials continued notifying his family.
Police located a second man at the scene and detained him after he was identified as the shooter. Authorities had not announced the man’s identity or any criminal charges.
Officers secured the area while detectives with the Fort Dodge Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division collected evidence and interviewed potential witnesses.
Investigators have not released information explaining what led to the shooting, saying disclosing additional details could compromise the ongoing investigation.
Police said the shooting was an isolated incident involving two people who knew each other and that there was no continuing threat to the public.
Authorities are asking anyone who saw or heard anything in the neighborhood around the time of the shooting to contact the Fort Dodge Police Department. Residents and businesses with surveillance, doorbell or other video from the area are especially encouraged to speak with investigators.
