SUMNER — Gerald Edward “Bubba” Galer, a proud United States Navy veteran who spent the past 25 years in Sumner after living and working across the country, died Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette. He was 79.
Graveside services with military rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2026, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive in Adel.
Gerald was born August 24, 1946, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Beryl and Geraldine “Daisy” Galer.
He attended school in Kalamazoo and graduated from Loy Norrix High School in 1965. Following graduation, Gerald enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War era from 1965 until receiving his honorable discharge in 1967.
Gerald married Mary Schneider on July 2, 1979, at Fayette Wesleyan Church. The couple made their home in several communities across the United States before settling in Sumner, where Gerald lived for the final 25 years of his life.
Known to many as “Bubba,” Gerald held an assortment of demanding jobs throughout his working years. His career included time as a heavy-equipment operator, rancher, farmhand, over-the-road truck driver and bargeman.
He also worked at Wheeler’s Locker in Sumner for many years, becoming a familiar face to customers and others throughout the community.
Away from work, Gerald enjoyed hunting, fishing, following sports and spending time socializing with friends. His military service remained an important source of pride throughout his life.
Gerald is survived by his brother, Beryl (Noma) Galer of Grand Rapids, Michigan; nephews, Kevin (Jennifer) Galer and Jeffrey (Christa) Galer; close friends, Jeff and Lisa Smith of Sumner; and several extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Beryl and Geraldine Galer, and his wife, Mary.
