Car burnt to a crisp early Saturday morning

MASON CITY – Details are still emerging in a car fire that totally destroyed a car early Saturday morning near downtown Mason City.

Mason City firefighters responded to a car fire, early Saturday morning at about 3:00 AM at 425 1st Street NE. Flames were said to have engulfed the car and a caller was worried it might spread to a nearby garage.

Rick Mathes, owner of the garage and rental property next door, said, “As long as everyone is okay, this is all cosmetics. The damage to the garage is minimal with just a little money coming out of my pockets.”

“This car was maroon,” informed Mathes, “I am not mechanic, I am not a fire marshal, but my layman’s opinion is that is is very difficult for a car to start on fire by itself. That was a hot fire.”

NIT has requested more information from the Mason City Fire Department.

From the pictures, it looks like most of the damage was from the dash forward. I would guess a short under the hood. When the plastic cars of today catch fire, they go pretty quick, and they’re hot. I’m surprised that that all the interior isn’t gone.
