MASON CITY – On Thursday, January 2, 2013, the Mason City Historic Preservation Commission will discuss and vote on a recommendation to nominate both Parker’s Woods Park and East Park to the National Register of Historic Places. At the meeting, residents will learn more about the proposed districts, the National Register nomination process; and the benefits of being in a National Register of Historic Places district.

The Commission meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. City staff will make a brief presentation on each nomination. Following the presentation, the Commission will conduct a question and answer session regarding the nominations. Finally, after all questions have been addressed, the Commission will make a final recommendation on the listing of the East Park District and the Parker’s Woods Park District. A copy of the nominations and supporting documents are available for viewing at the Mason City Public Library; in the Development Services Department office in City Hall; and on the City’s web page, www.masoncity.net.

Parker’s Woods Park, located on the east side of Willow Creek, was originally constructed by the National Youth Administration between 1939 and 1941. The nomination consists of a district with three contributing resources: the site, the shelter house and the entrance bollards. All three elements exhibit a high degree of historic integrity and are a classic example of projects associated with Depression-era federal programs. The East Park District includes the park itself along with the Historic East Park Band Shell; the Park Department maintenance building; 457 Cannonball; Shelters 1, 3 and 4; tennis courts; stone bridge; the roadway system and the waterway system and stream structures. The City of Mason City is undertaking this project as part of the historical mitigation work associated with the City’s flood buyout project. The cost of the project is funded by FEMA.
