MASON CITY – Cheapskate, stupid, or just plain evil?

Police said Thursday that a Mason City man was too cheap to pay a vet to humanely put his dog down, so instead, he grabbed a plastic bag and suffocated it.

Peter Joseph Olson, age 36, is accused of placing a plastic bag over a 5-year-old Sharpei’s head with the intent to asphyxiate it because he did not want to pay a vet to euthanize the animal, police told NIT. Olson then allegedly discarded the dead pet in a nearby dumpster.

Olson was arrested by Mason City police at his home at 637 South President Avenue Thursday afternoon and charged with one count of animal neglect. He is innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone with information concerning this or related animal cases is asked to contact the MCPD at 641-421-3636.

This might explain why he was charged with Neglect.
Apparently MC ‘Animal Control Officer’ doesn’t know the difference between ABUSE/ NEGLECT.

@Anonymous-Legally I don’t know if he can be convicted on either charge. Although I don’t like what he did because there were other more humane options available, I am not sure what he did was against the law. I think neglect might be hard to prove and leaving emotion out of it I don’t think he abused the animal in the eyes of the law.

LVS’ are you serious? He admitted he killed the dog. He also admitted that he killed two cats. Under Iowa law that is Abuse. He should of been charged with both. Apparently it was reported that he held his animals under water until they couldn’t breathe as a form of “discipline” That is considered abuse and not to mention “EVIL”. He had more animals in his home that according to his face book posts “He Had To Put Down” where are those animals?

@Kelli-wake up. I never said I liked it or condoned it. I just said I am not sure it is against the law. If he had used a gun in town then it would have been something else, but he didn’t. I am willing to bet the judge lets him off with probation for using poor judgement. It is not illegal to kill a animal no matter what you feel. It is illegal to mistreat them and abuse them but not to put them down. You don’t know the whole story so you are operating on emotion intead of law. Big…

WHY is he being charged with ONE count of Neglect? What he did was Abuse and Neglect. *Iowa law states that animal abuse is intentionally injuring, maiming, disfiguring or destroying an animal owned by another person, in any manner, including intentionally poisoning the animal.*

@Keli-You said it yourself “owned by another person” it states in the article it was his animal, that means he owned it and has the right to put it down. He used bad judgement in the way he did it but he did have the right under the LAW. If you don’t like it change the LAW, until then back off.

Never will I back off old man!

        Animal Neglect:
Iowa law states that animals must have food, water, veterinary care and adequate shelter (dogs and cats only) provided to them.

        Animal Abuse:
Iowa law states that animal abuse is intentionally injuring, maiming, disfiguring or destroying an animal owned by another person, in any manner, including intentionally poisoning the animal. (I’m pretty sure this means your own animals as well)

I have known Peter and his wife for a number of years, and I absolutley did not believe this when I read it, def not in their charactor. I will not defend what he did, because it’s horrific on every level.
What needs to be done, is #1, take every animal and child out of that house. No excuses. Animals and children should not be subjected to violence in the household.
#2 is he needs some sort of mental conseling. He needs help or he needs to be locked up!

I don’t see the problem. He was going to kill the dog anyway. Why does it matter how the dog dies? It is like cleaning the skin where the lethal shot is going to be injected. Why do animals have more rights and protections then some people? Let him go with a slap on the hand and get over it.

^Why do animals have more rights than people? Um, when has it ever been ok to euthanize a person for no good goddamn reason? Then, the kill-happy freak just threw the poor, defenseless member of his family in the f*cking garbage?! So, if he had a child that was “inconvenient” or “too expensive” he should just be able to take that child’s life? WTF is wrong with u? I’d definitely do jail time to help this sicko see the light. What a puke.

Animals are not family members. Animals should not be compared to humans. I don’t care how anyone feels about their animals they are NOT people and they are NOT family members. There is nothing wrong with me. I just don’t see the point of people getting all worked up over this.

We are all animals. Just because you have no conscience, doesn’t mean us decent humans don’t. Pets are the most loyal givers of unconditional love, protection, and comfort. They have feelings. That’s more than can be said about many people in this world.

Theres right and wrong in this world and its IMPORTANT to know the difference. If the animal truly needed to be put down there are NUMEROUS ways to do it humanely. What he did was TORTURE. Theres known facts out there that animal cruelty is just the beginning of more serious issues developing in someone. You clearly think animal rights is a waste of time BUT many of us don’t. And no matter how you twist it what he did was WRONG if it wasn’t he wouldn’t be in jail right now he would be…

They did have an animal in the house on 4/10 and when abuse was alleged the animal was retrieved by the rescue that adopted it to him and his wife. They also had a foster dog in the home from another rescue and on 4/11 that animal was retrieved. The five year old dog he killed was not due to lack of money – they had just recently adopted an animal and in fact on 4/9 they were looking to adopt 2 additional animals from yet another shelter. He admitted to killing 1 dog and 2 cats so far.

Go to a shelter an walk a dog to get your animal fix for the day.what a total low life! Good like hiding because karma will find you might not be today might take five years but itll come.

No one “needs” to euthanize a healthy five year old dog. He wanted to. He got a cheap thrill out of killing. That is sic.
