MASON CITY – Mason City Mayor Eric Bookmeyer wants city councilman Travis Hickey re-appointed to the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Board, and has added his re-appointment as a director to the agenda for Tuesday’s city council meeting.
Hickey is known as one of Bookmeyer’s lackeys – rarely or never going against the mayor on any vote in the 4-plus years he has been on the council. Bookmeyer and Hickey have become close friends; the mayor is known to drink beer at Hickey’s house, back in the double garage Hickey illegally maintains (he and the council later changed zoning laws to make it legal). Hickey also has been known to drink alcohol at Bookmeyer’s house, as well. NIT is told the mayor now prefers Moscow Mules as his drink of choice.
Bookmeyer himself remains on the Corridor board as an ex-officio. Together, Bookmeyer and Hickey as part of the Corridor have championed jobs that pay $9.50 per hour as their greatest accomplishment while throwing hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars into the Corridor. Hickey and the council voted to give more money to the Corridor this year – over $20,000 more than in 2013-2014 – despite budget shortfalls and rising taxes.
Many now say that Hickey is confused about economic development and jobs in general; last year, he said that City Hall should operate like a McDonald’s restaurant. He also said that the MicroEntrprise program created jobs, only later to be told in public at a council meeting by a Pappajohn official that the program – seen by many as a dud – created no jobs at all. Bookmeyer and Hickey also tried to take the jobs of at least a dozen Mason City citizens when they attempted to privatize the sanitation department. In addition, Hickey has regularly attacked and criticized public servants such as firefighters, police officers and code enforcement officers because he either thinks they do their jobs wrong or earn too much money.
One politically-connected Mason City citizen said Friday “Congratulations, Mason City. This is a blue-collar town with thousands of struggling folks, and you have a mayor and a councilman who drink booze together and conjure up idea after idea on how to screw all of you over.”

Hickey and Bookmeyer are two elitist drinkers. Dollars to donuts they’d be for locking up medical marijuana users, while slamming Moscow mules.
