SUMNER, IA – A teen driving with his school permit and using an electronic device was injured and hospitalized after he rolled his vehicle.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, on May 11 at about 7 PM, dispatchers received a 911 call of a one-vehicle personal injury accident near the intersection of Highway 93 and N Avenue, west of Sumner, Iowa. Upon further investigation by a sheriff’s deputy, it was determined that Dakota James Everly, age 16 of Winthrop, Iowa, was driving a green 2001 Ford Expedition eastbound on highway 93, when he lost control of his vehicle, which rolled twice, and came to rest in the north ditch.

Everly was taken to Sumner Hospital by ambulance for injuries sustained in the accident. The vehicle was estimated to be a total loss. Everly was cited for failure to maintain control and use of electronic communication device while driving. Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Fayette Ambulance and Fayette Fire Department.

In 2013, Everly was arrested and charged with third degree Burglary (a class D felony) following an investigation into items taken from a residence in the 100 block West Monroe Street in Winthrop on Saturday, December 29, 2012. Everly was referred to Juvenile Court Services on the charge and released.
