iowa-dot-logo-2014AMES – One of the most important safety factors in an Iowa winter is the ability to judge travel conditions when making a decision on whether or not to take to the road.

For more than a decade Iowans have used http://www.511ia.org to help make that critical decision. But when you’re on the site and see that a road is listed as partially covered, what does that look like? Over the years the Iowa Department of Transportation has been adding cameras to 511 to allow people to see camera images of exactly what the road looks like at any given moment.

The Iowa DOT has recently added cameras on two commuter corridors: Interstate 35 from Ankeny to Ames and U.S. 30 from Ames to Nevada. Additional cameras on U.S. 30 from Boone to Ames should come online in the next month. These cameras provide streaming video and still images. Like the other DOT cameras on the system, the images and video are not used for law enforcement or currently recorded.
