CHARLES CITY – A years-long legal battle over a multi-million dollar gift has come to an end following a decisive ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court. The court this week ruled in favor of Floyd County Medical Center (FCMC) regarding the estate of Herman Stille, bringing a high-profile dispute with the Mayo Clinic to a final close.
The Supreme Court’s decision upholds a previous ruling from the First Judicial District Court of Iowa, affirming that more than $10 million from the Stille estate will be awarded to the Charles City hospital. The funds are designated to support the construction of a state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility on the FCMC campus.
Herman C. Stille, a local philanthropist, had intended his substantial bequest to establish oncology services for North Iowa residents. However, the project was delayed as the Mayo Clinic challenged whether the hospital’s plans met the specific standards and collaborative oversight outlined in Stille’s will. With the Supreme Court upholding the lower court’s decision, FCMC officials say they can finally move forward with the project.
“The ruling brings FCMC’s extensive legal battle with the Mayo Clinic to a close,” the medical center stated in an update. “FCMC can now move forward in bringing oncology services closer to home with plans to develop the Stille Cancer Center on its campus.”
The new center is expected to be a major addition to the regional healthcare landscape, allowing patients in and around Floyd County to receive specialized cancer care without the need for extensive travel to larger medical hubs.
