IOWA CITY — An Iowa woman is facing a felony arson charge after authorities say she intentionally set fire to her ground-floor apartment, allegedly stating she wanted to “make a crime scene”.
Cara J. Hanson, 20, was arrested following a residential fire that broke out early Sunday morning at 814 South Lucas Street, a seedy area of mostly student housing in Iowa City. The Iowa City Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at approximately 4:52 a.m. on April 26, 2026, after a resident in the second-floor unit was awakened by smoke alarms. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered flames visible from a first-floor window. Two occupants managed to escape the building safely before emergency crews arrived, and the blaze was brought under control within seven minutes.
While the structure sustained an estimated $25,000 in damages, no injuries were reported.
According to a police affidavit, Hanson (the tenant of the ground-floor unit) approached the scene while firefighters were still working to extinguish the flames. Investigators noted that she initially made vague and conflicting statements regarding the origin of the fire, which fire officials determined had started on a couch.
During a subsequent interview at the police station, Hanson reportedly admitted to starting the couch on fire using a lighter. When questioned about her motive, she allegedly expressed displeasure with a recent crime scene and stated, “I’m going to make a crime scene”. Hanson further admitted that she was fully aware an individual lived in the apartment directly above hers, even identifying him by name. She told investigators that once the fire grew out of control, she left the residence and walked around the block before returning to watch the emergency response.
Hanson (pictured at top) has been charged with felony first-degree arson and was jailed. She now awaits further court proceedings.
The Iowa City Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing the investigation, and the displaced occupant is currently being assisted by the American Red Cross.
