“Adman” the hobo tells of his arrest experience in Mason City

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – Todd Vern Waters, AKA Adman, a hobo on his way to Hobo Days in Britt, was in the process of hopping his last train, when the Mason City Police Department arrested him, his daughter (Alexandra Waters) and a fellow hobo (Rondey Sykora) for trespassing.

“The first time I ever tried to hop a train, I was in Cheyenne, Wyoming, back in 1972, and I got arrested for trespassing,” Adman reminisced.  “With the arrest this past Wednesday, in Mason City for trespassing, it’s like bookends; bookends enclosing my Hobo Life.  My first ride and my last.

“My experience in the Mason City jail was a good one. All the personnel were nice and sympathized with my situation. They informed me of the man that died a couple weeks ago at the railroad, so I understand.”

See the video below for more of Adman’s experience at the Cerro Gordo Jail.

“As many times as I’ve been arrested,” Adman went on, “probably around 70 times, I have never had it be covered this much. With the newspaper and TV, it’s never been this big. With all those arrests, I have always smiled and have taught my daughter, Alexandra, to do the same.”

Adman added, “Come on down to the Hobo Convention and I’ll tell you more. That’s why they call me ‘Adman'”.
