MASON CITY – City Hall staff will give a presentation on the Disorderly Premises/Nuisance Gatherings ordinance that the city council is considering.
The presentation will be given on Monday evening, April 22nd, 2013 at 7:30 P.M. in the Mason City Room at the Mason City Public Library.
The ordinance was mainly crafted by At-Large City Council member Alex Kuhn. The ordinance cracks down on nuisance properties and landlords who rent to troublesome tenants.
The public presentation was ordered at last week’s city council meeting after one Mason City man expressed concern over how the ordinance would affect gatherings he holds at his property.
“We already have laws on the books to deal with the problems he is trying to deal with.”
Even when the current code is used, it is ineffective in forcing Landlords to police their own. The requirement of the property owner to take some responsibility for the antics on his or her property is demanded by the neighborhood.
The language of this particular legislation gives specific legal standing for consequences both to the perpetrator and property owner, over disruptive or illegal actions emanating from their property.
This type of ordinance enforcement was the way that Oelwein got rid of their massive meth problem. Check out the book “Meth Land”.
maybe if the courts would give out the appropriate punishment the cities would not have to go this route. like others have said about guns and other situations. We have enough laws to cover most situations, if the cops and courts would do their jobs as expected.
Because of Federal Fair Housing Standards, it’s almost impossible to turn down a prospective tenant anymore, even if you think they will be a problem. Unless that is addressed by this ordinance, you put the landlord in a catch-22 of epic proportions. Fine him for discrimination if he turns away thugs, then fine him for renting to them. GREAT IDEA!!
@ElNorte-this ordinance would give landlords some help in getting rid of those people or at least bringing them in line. If the police get called to the address enough times they would cite the landlord requiring him to do something about it.
And then when you look at the city trying to get rid of the HRC in Mason City by installing their own men in charge. It will only make it easier for the city to do what THEY want. What if, there was someone the city wanted to harass. For whatever reason, it happens. Oh wait… maybe there was a few weeks ago with the first mayor candidate, Mr Simonds.
@50 miles south-I don’t know if Simonds is a good example. But I do get your point.
@Anonymous-There are some landlords that just don’t care. There are two houses down the street from us that have the police there three or four times a week for various things. These houses are owned by Hardy of course. Most landlords do care and this is another tool that allows them to do something about the problem. Usually I am critical of our city council but, this time I think they are doing something that needs to be done. Look at all the empty buildings that are disasters and the houses and apartments that look like junk yards. It all started when the slum lords bought property and didn’t take care of them. Now they will have to. I think the good landlords will welcome this.
OMG
Does this lunatic councilman really think that a landlord wants to “rent to troublesome tenant?”
Does this idiot councilman think anyone wants a troublesome property?
Does this airhead councilman think? Really?
We already have laws on the books to deal with the problems he is trying to deal with.
Laws upon laws, just what we need!
Another head shaker!!!!!
