Plunge for Landon comes to Mason City (photos & video)

MASON CITY – Over the past several days people have been gathering at Big Blue and doing the “Plunge for Landon” – a fundraising venture which began when a Facebook page was started last month to raise awareness for baby Landon Shaw, a four-month-old baby fighting cancer.

The idea is, a person takes a plunge into cold water and challenges at least 3 people to follow, and they have 24 hours to do it. As part of the plunge, the challenger pledges to donate an amount of money for each person who makes the jump in time. You do not have to be challenged to participate; you can start the challenge yourself and make a pledge.

The craze is spreading far and wade, with many people across North Iowa, the United States and even from Germany – according to a Facebook page for the fundraiser – have taken part.

Two NIACC students took time out of their Easter Sunday to do the “Landon Plunge” at Big Blue. Kory Attleson nominated Nate Aitchison to do the plunge.

“It was worth it,” said Nate. “A good cause.”

NO, you cannot have fun in this town!! Thats why nobody moves here.
I had a friend tell me she was stopped by the Mason City PD this weekend for SPEEDING ON HER BIKE! Not motorcycle, Bike?
Welcome Ragbrai, sound like the police state has begun early! If I were a rider, I would just keep riding. No need to stop here and be hastled just like 29 years ago.
My guess is this will be the last time they stop here. I sure hope so, to fun of event to have it wrecked here.

@Sad-sorry, but bikes have to obey the rules of the road (laws) just like motor vehicles. That includes speed limits and driving on the correct side of the road. They must stop at all stop signs as well.

My daughter and I will be doing the plunge tonight!

Well for crying out loud nobody can have fun in this town not even for a good cause unless of course you run around town naked then that’s all right. Maybe they need to change the sign saying jump at your own risk then noone will get sued. Thanks and good job boys

While for a good cause, jumpers are breaking the rules at Big Blue. The railing around the deck says, NO DIVING/JUMPING. This I’m sure is a safety warning to keep people from hurting themselves, and then sueing the city.

@Allen-I have a Great niece and nephew who have done this because of peer pressure. If someone with a bad heart does this it will probably kill them. There are a couple of people hurt (one has a broken neck) from diving into shallow water doing this. While the cause is good one has to wonder if it is worth the risk. Just donate the money and be done without the risk.

Moronic

My daughter and I took the plunge yesterday. Wow was the water cold!! Great way to raise money. We are donating our money straight to the. American Cancer Society

Let’s see how much money LVS in a dunk tank would make.
