Hot Property: Mel Gibson sells Malibu compound

By Lauren Beale, Los Angeles Times –

LOS ANGELES — It took more than two years and several price cuts, but a compound in Malibu owned by now-divorced couple Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore Gibson has sold for $9,261,250. The property had been listed in March 2010 at $14.5 million.

The buyer is recently divorced reality TV producer Mike Fleiss.

Described as an “old world hacienda,” the main house features hand-painted details, stone and hardwood floors, several fireplaces, six bedrooms and 5 1/2 bathrooms. The master suite has a sitting room with a fireplace and two walk-in closets. The property includes three self-contained guesthouses, a two-story entertainment pavilion with a kitchen and fireplace, a separate media room, a gym, a lighted tennis court, a swimming pool, a spa and mature pepper, oak and avocado trees.

The Gibsons, who were married in 1980, bought the property from singer-songwriter Rick Springfield and his wife, Barbara, in 1989 for close to its listing price of $3 million, according to Los Angeles Times archives. Springfield, 63, won a Grammy in 1981 for his hit “Jessie’s Girl.”

Actor-director Mel Gibson, 56, won two Oscars (best director and best picture) in 1996 for “Braveheart.” Among his films are “Edge of Darkness” (2010), “Signs” (2002) and “The Patriot” (2000). The Gibsons were divorced last year.

Fleiss, 48, created “The Bachelor” and “The Bachlorette.” He sold another Malibu house for $6 million shortly before closing on the Gibson compound.

FAMILY OUTGREW THE PLACE

Actors Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott have flown the coop in Malibu, selling their 1.73-acre fowl-friendly property for $2.3 million.

The 2,300-square-foot renovated house features century-old oak floors, three bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. Custom-built sliding doors lead to multiple decks, an outdoor fireplace and sitting areas. There is a chicken coop, a horse corral, an organic garden and fruit trees on the gated lot.

Spelling, 39, played Donna Martin in “Beverly Hills, 90210” (1990-2000) and reprised the role in “90210” (2009).

McDermott, 45, played Constable Turnbull on “Due South” (1997-99) and appeared on the crime drama “1-800-Missing” (2003-04).

The couple, who have starred together on several of their own reality shows, had their fourth baby in August. They sold because they wanted more room for their family.

Public records show the couple bought the property last year for $2.4 million. They listed it in April at $2.675 million.

THERE’S A BUYER IN THE PICTURE

Celebrity and fashion photographer Mark Liddell’s redone house in Hollywood Hills West has clicked with a buyer, selling for $2.05 million.

The serial remodeler transformed the one-level contemporary, which sits on a third of an acre studded with palm tress, by giving it a resort-like focus. The single-story house contains 2,652 square feet of living space including a living room, family room, formal dining room, a kitchen with a breakfast area and two master suites for a total of four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Patios, a lawn, a swimming pool and spa, a built-in barbecue and an outdoor fireplace complete the exterior.

Liddell, whose 2009 book, “Exposed: 10 Years in Hollywood,” chronicles more than 100 shoots of A-listers and luminaries, has been designing home interiors for more than 15 years. His long list of celebrity subjects includes Leann Rimes, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, Sarah Jessica Parker and Janet Jackson.

Public records show Liddell bought the property last year for $1.61 million.
