U.S. supports term limits for Congress

PRINCETON, N.J., Jan. 19 (UPI) — U.S. adults support setting term limits for members of Congress and abolishing the Electoral College, a Gallup poll indicates.

Both issues cut across party lines, with strong majorities among Democrats, Republicans and independents. Both would require amending the U.S. Constitution.

Overall, 75 percent of respondents said they would vote for term limits and only 21 percent said they would vote against them if the issue was on the ballot. Support was higher among Republicans at 82 percent, dropping to 79 percent for independents and 65 percent for Democrats.

On the electoral college, 65 percent said they would vote for abolition, and 29 percent said they would vote against it. Partisan differences were smaller, with 66 percent of Democrats, 63 percent of independents and 61 percent of Republicans favoring abolition.

Gallup said it has conducted polls on both issues over the years and had generally found strong support for both term limits and direct election of the president. One exception is that immediately after George W. Bush won the 2000 presidential race after losing the popular vote to Al Gore Republican support for doing away with the electoral college dropped significantly, although it has bounced back.

Gallup interviewed 1,013 adults across the country as part of its daily tracking survey Jan. 8-9. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

And the 1st one to go should KING!

In the military unit commanding officers are transfered every 4 years.

@My Opinion-not a good catch at all. I have always been for term limits and have said so on this site many times. It just happens that this poll agrees with MY beliefs. The other poll was by a far left news source that always has slanted news and polls. That doesn’t make me a hypocrtite, it makes me honest.

I stand with happyguy on this one. In my opinion (hence, my moniker) he nailed it. You can’t have it both ways.

I don’t need it both ways. As I said< I have said repeatedly over a period of months that I was for term limits. It is nothing new. You are entitled to "stand where ever you want. Just remember, you are judged by those you hang with.

LVS…it has nothing to do with what you support. It has to do with the only polls you believe are polls that support your opinions. If one that asks 1110 people isn’t asking enough people why is one that asks 1013 people asking enough. You can’t have it both ways. I know you’re not speaking to me but explain it to Just My Opinion.

@LVS, it doesn’t matter what you or I say they will take the opposite view or spin our words trying to make us the fool or just plain looking for a fight.

maybe, I didn’t spin any words. I quoted LVS. I know you don’t believe in facts but that’s what it is. A fact.

We not only need to have term limits but also eliminate the salary for life. There is no reason why a term in Congress should lead to a permanent paycheck.

@Katie-I completely agree with your statement and would lie to add that they need to be on the same retirement as the rest of us with the same medical insurance. If Social Security and Medicare are good enough for us they should be good enough for them. If they were on S.S. and medicare I really believe they would solve this funding issue. I get so tired of hearing them threaten to cut off funding for the military and social security every time there is a debt crisis brought on by overspending by the government. Cut their wages and benefits and see how fast they solve it.

Should have been “like” not lie. Tried to change it but was to slow.

Exactly. We’ll need to keep the salaries a little higher, however, if we want to attract high quality candidates. They just won’t get as many perks outside of their salaries.

Found it very interesting that shortly after the election where Al Gore beat G.W. Bush (popular vote only), Republicans weren’t so gung-ho about abolishing the Electoral College. I have to be fair, however, and say the Democrats most likely would have felt the same if the results had been reversed.

We need new blood in Congress!!

I would agree with this poll. I believe it is the only way to get the crooks out of office and get the government back to the people. Term limits are the answer and I think popular vote is the way to go. How many elections are decided by Ohio? it is not right. Makes you think your vote just doesn’t matter.

I agree with you 100 percent. Some of the
Congress and Senators have been in office for so long they don’t know what the real world is all about and now they are raising and grooming their children to take their place.

“1110 people surveyed is not a good sampling of the people in the U.S”. LVS does this sound familiar? Came from your post on Jan 19 @ 9:07 AM. The topic was…54% in U.S. want stricter gun laws. If 1110 isn’t good enough why would 1013 be good enough. Could it be because you agree with one and disagree with the other? Hypocrite.

I should make that last sentance simpler for you.. Could it be because you agree with one poll result and disagree with the other?

Good catch, Happyguy!

“I should make that last sentance simpler for you.. Could it be because you agree with one poll result and disagree with the other?”
Pretty much like you?

I don’t base any opinion on polls. I have disagreed with the supporters of a poll question asked. LVS said that 1110 people polled wasn’t enough people for a legitimate poll then turns around and thinks a poll is legitimate when only 1013 people were asked. Like I told LVS you can’t have it both ways. You are entitled to your opinion, but that isn’t what this is about.

“Like I told LVS you can’t have it both ways.”

” The ones I trusted were very accurate.”

Having it both ways?
