UPDATED: UI wrestlers accused of hunting rabbits on campus

Vanessa Miller, CR Gazette –

Two University of Iowa wrestlers have been suspended indefinitely from the team after they were arrested by campus police for illegally hunting rabbits around the west dorms to make hats.

UI freshman wrestlers Connor Ryan and Alex Meyer, both 18, were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of discharging toy guns and slingshots after admitted to police that they were out hunting rabbits on campus on Thursday and again on Tuesday, according to criminal complaints.

A UI police complaint states that a security officer saw two men, one with a long gun, on the south side of the nursing building about 9:14 p.m. Tuesday. Officers checked the area and later found Meyer and Ryan in Hillcrest Residence Hall, where they live, with rabbits and rabbit skins, according to a complaint.

In addition to the toy guns charge, both were cited for hunting after hours, and Meyer was cited for hunting without a license, according to the reports.

In the complaints, both men admitted to hunting with friends around the west dorm and Skunk Hollow area to make hats. It’s unclear whether officers believe more people were involved in the hunting incident.

The men are accused of using BB guns and air rifles, and the UI Athletic Department released a statement that said they will be suspended indefinitely until their case is addressed according to the Athletics Department Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.

Meyer and Ryan both competed at Lindenwood’s Joe Parisi Open on Saturday. Meyer placed sixth at 174 pounds, posting a 4-3 record. Ryan did not place, finishing 3-2 at 141.

Meyer, 18, from Pleaant Hill, was a three-time state medalist and a state champion last year for Southeast Polk. Meyer was the 170-pound state champion in Class 3A in February. He finished fifth as a junior and sixth as a sophomore.

Ryan, 18, was a four-time state runner-up at Bettendorf. He finished second at 138 pounds in February, losing to Des Moines Roosevelt’s four-time state champion John Meeks, who is at Iowa State University. We was runner-up at 125, 112 and 103 the previous three seasons, finishing behind current Hawkeye teammate Cory Clark.
