Beating the “spike” in gas prices

Cory Adams gets some gas Monday in Mason City.

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – Cory Adams of Clear Lake took advantage of a discount currently being offered at Wal-Mart Gas.

If you purchase a Wal-Mart Gift Card, and use it to purchase Wal-Mart Gas, you receive $.10 off per gallon.

Adams was getting gas  and said, “I’m just using the discount they offer, for a better price by using their card.”

Oh, and the hair?

“It’s just my every day hair-do,” Cory said.

I have always heard that cheap gas places do not have the additives that keep engines running cleanly like brand name gas does. I just heard on the news that CA is waiting for winter gas to be delivered to their stations as it is cheaper than summer gas because of the difference in additives.

was this gasoline or diesel fuel?

Gasoline

Here’s an article that talks about “winter” gas in the last paragraph:

While i am not an expert on this. I would assume that the winter gas may be a california air quality issue. which we do not have here in Iowa. they called it less refined in the article, which would be cheaper. isnt diesel fuel simply less refined fuel? someone please concur. If this is true, then diesel should be much cheaper than regular gasoline. But it isnt….WHY??? because in the 80s many more diesel vehicles started to be produced. that along with more semi traffic hauling products rather than the railroad system. you dont have to be a brain surgeon to figure this one out. before the 80s, diesel was much cheaper than gasoline, because it isnt refined as much as regular or unleaded gasoline. I also want to put this fact out for someone to dispute. back in the 60s and before, leaded gas was higher because the oil companies said they had to ADD the lead. then in the 70s they changed to saying they had to remove the lead and thats why unleaded was higher. everyone needs to understand the history of what the oil companies say to be true, to really understand the lies they tell.

“Ethanol sucks ….it raises food costs.”

Can you offer anything to substantiate that claim?

ethanol does give the farmers a source to sell their corn. so that is good for iowa farmers. however ethanol DOES give you a weaker spark and therefore gives you less power and fuel econemy. just as anyone that uses E85, and they will confirm that it isnt worth the small savings.

You two are the bomb I just love reading your up beat articles and your photos Kelly and Jody! Keep up the great work.

I wouldn’t run that WalMart gas in my lawnmower, much less my car.

Why not?

It is unbranded and therefore it is what is left after the brands get theirs. My son is in the business and tells me he would never run that stuff. It has none of the needed additives and a lot of times has a very high water content because it comes from the bottom of the tank. I have way to much money invested in my vehicle to run Murphy or any other unbranded. At least with Ethonal you get aclcohol which helps keep it from freezing and keeps your fuel system clean. What you save at the pump you lose in mileage.

Ethanol sucks. Piss poor mileage and it raises food costs.

Give me a break. Gas Stop in town use to have the cheapest gas in town back in the day and people would say the same thing. There is nothing wrong with Wal Marts gas, which by the way in Not WalMart gas. Murphy just rents the space from Wal Mart just like Subway and the hair place. I have used it for years and have never had any problems. If something is wrong with the gas we would have heard about it long ago.
