From Carmen and Mike Tickal, owners of Oak Leaf Collectibles in downtown Mason City –
MASON CITY – Oak Leaf Collectibles opened for business in Mason City on October 1, 1977. Mike Tickal and his father Frank “Pat” Tickal opened the store after years of operating as weekend warriors at conventions and flea markets. Pat’s love of Postage Stamps and Mike’s of Comic Books, and the large inventory they had amassed over the years forced them to move operations from their house to a full fledge store.
Over the years they have adapted their business to fit the times and varying trends in collectibles. The biggest change over the years has been the advent of the internet. They started developing their own web site dustcatchers.com, in 1998 and have seen their internet business grow from a sale here and there, to the point where they now ship out 150-200 packages a week.
After relocating a couple of times in the early years, the business settled in the heart of Mason City, at 221 North Federal They have been at this location for over 1.5 years now. Oak Leaf Collectibles is the largest store of its kind in Iowa, and the Upper Midwest. They are a full service, one-stop shopping experience for Comic Books & related items, Pop Culture items, like Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, and more. Since the flood of June 2008, the store has regrouped, remodeled, and expanded its inventory Pop Culture items, (Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Wizard of Oz, Disney, and more) to over 500 different items.
