Harkin Announces Nearly $50 Million in Low-Income Heating Assistance for Iowans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) recently announced that Iowa has been awarded $49,684,403 through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The funding will help eligible Iowans meet home energy costs as cold winter months approach. Today’s funding was made possible by a provision included by Senator Harkin in this year’s Continuing Resolution. Harkin chairs the Appropriations subcommittee that funds LIHEAP.

“LIHEAP funds are critical for a state like Iowa that have long, cold winters,” Harkin said. “Access to this program provides a safety net for our nation’s low-income households, especially those with children and senior citizens. Without this assistance, thousands of families in our state face the impossible choice between paying their heating bills or buying necessary items like groceries.”

In Fiscal Year 2012, an estimated 88,000 Iowan households received LIHEAP assistance.

The “poor” should be at some kind of job where it is warm…getting tired of paying for parasites

If I had won the lottery I was going to buy a home in the Bahamas. That way I might have run into the guy who claims to represent me.

In the end a good chunk is going to the greedy utility company that just keeps raising rates.

happyguy, I believe in giving to the needy, not having mine taken and then given. More socialism!!
Those of us here, who get up and go to work everyday, are tired of working to take care of everyone else!
Socialism DOES NOT WORK, PERIOD. If you keep working for nothing, then I guess they will quit working too. Easier to sit home on your a$$ than go out and get a JOB.
I for one am sick of it

not good, I donate time every week to the food bank. I know there are some who take advantage of charities. But most who use them need them. You need to remeber that a family of 2 trying to live off 40 hrs a week at minimum wage is just over the poverty line. Its all they can do to pay rent. Many who use charity do work and work very hard. They just don’t make any money doing it.

To add to what happyguy says – many of those receiving the assistance are the elderly whose Social Security is the only income they have and the disabled who cannot work because of injuries they may have received serving our country. You want to put them out in the cold? You want to tell the servicemen and women who were injured protecting you that you don’t care about them and that they should get a job? Well, then you find the employer who will hire them. And you invite your elderly neighbors and (God forbid) your elderly parents to your warm, comfortable home so they can stay warm. You are an unthankful, uncaring boob.

50 million FREE dollars. Its like everything else, it dont cost nothin

Exactly right. Tommy Bahama wants you to think he is handing out free cash from the goodness of his heart.
Those are your tax $ people.
50 million, just for Iowa alone.
Fiscal cliff anyone?

“Tommy Bahama” – now I like that one!

Harkin does’t need the heat where he spends his time. Maybe he should include air fare for constituents to visit his digs so they can see how the senator really “cares” about them.

Where does it say free money? And what would you have them do? Freeze to death? I know a lot of you people here don’t believe in helping the needy, but letting them and their kids freeze!! Come on.

Happyguy, if they are on min. wage, they should not get married and have kids for that matter. I am all for helping those in need, but that is a family matter, not the business of government. This is why we are 16 trillion in debt. When are we going to wake up? There is no more money! The US has no money!

At the rate Alliant Energy keeps raising their rates we will ALL need financial help with their bills.

Give it to people who need it. Not the welfare bunny’s who do not deserve it.
