Drew Tate got hit illegally Sunday, and the aggressor got hit in the wallet Wednesday

Mike Hlas, CR Gazette –

On Sunday, Montreal Alouettes linebacker Shea Emry came down hard on Calgary Stampeders quarterback Drew Tate, the former Iowa Hawkeye.

Wednesday, the Canadian Football League came down on Emry, fining him an undisclosed amount.

In the second quarter of Calgary’s 38-10 thrashing of the Alouettes, Emry took an unnecessary roughness penalty for leading with his facemask in tackling quarterback Drew Tate, who was on the ground after recovering his own fumble.

According to this Montreal Gazette story, Emry’s hit occurred at least three seconds after Tate recovered the ball. No whistle could be detected on the play, and Emry continues to maintain Tate showed signs of arising before administering the tackle.

“I don’t care, to be honest,” Emry said Tuesday. “People are going to think what they want about the play … whether I’m a dirty player. The only thing I regret is my team suffered a loss for a decision I made. I was playing football.

“You make mistakes and can’t look back.”

Did it hurt, Tate was asked.

“Didn’t feel good,” he replied.

Tate’s photo was on the game tickets at Calgary for that game, in which Tate passed for 299 yards and a touchdown.

“He’s been a starter for five games, so he’s got a lot of growth to do,” said Calgary Coach John Hufnagel. “But when he’s on the field, he makes plays for you. He gets the ball to his playmakers. He didn’t have a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination, but he played well enough to get us a win.’’

Calgary plays at Toronto Saturday.

This is my second or third Drew Tate post in the last couple weeks. It’s a slow time in Iowa sports, basically vacation time after a recruiting the weekend before last. But when is the last time a former Hawkeye quarterback did anything of note in pro football other than Brad Banks for the Iowa Barnstormers in 2011?
