Joint statement by Senators Jochum, Ragan and Bolkcom –
Governor Branstad has finally produced a health care plan. Unfortunately, his plan won’t make Iowa the healthiest state. In fact, Iowa will fall behind other states who decide instead to expand Medicaid.
Here’s what’s wrong with the Governor’s plan:
First, the Governor’s plan costs all Iowans more while covering fewer people.
Second, the Governor’s plan forces Iowans to pay twice. The Governor’s plan raises local property taxes and costs more than $150 million in state taxes. At the same time, Iowans pay the federal taxes to fund Medicaid expansion even if we don’t take part.
Third, if the Governor truly wants Iowa to be the healthiest state, his plan won’t get the job done.
That’s our immediate response to what was released late today.
Now is the time for the Legislature to hear from Iowans. If you want Iowa to a great place to live for everyone, including working Iowans who don’t earn much, you need to speak up now.
Republicans just can’t stop taxing and spending!
@Anonymous-OK, say you are right (I think you will be) and the Feds quit paying in three years. Iowa will be sucked into the mess anyway. Meanwhile, we are paying for a insurance plan that will not do what it is intended. There is no way low income people can travel to Ft. Dodge, Des Moines or Iowa City to see a doctor. There is no way someone making minimum wage can pay any part of a premium or co-pay. They just do not have the money. So, they will continue to go to the E.R’s like they do now and nothing will change. Branstads plan will not work so you are wasting money.
And three years from now when the Feds quit paying the bill period??? O I see put it off and stick your head in the mud…. And double tax to pay for it, what’s new we’re double taxed to pay your salaries!!!
But it is so poorly written. Democrats need to freshen up their writing skills.
