May 27, 2020 – August 3, 2025
Ozrael Cruz Guerrero was born May 27, 2020, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center. From the moment he entered the world, time seemed to pause for his parents, Dave Guerrero and Whittney Hubert. In that instant, their hearts were forever changed. The depth of their love for him was immediate and unconditional — a love so fierce it shaped the rest of their lives. And in return, Ozrael gave that love back twofold, always reminding those around him what truly matters.
Throughout his life, Oz was deeply cherished and fiercely protected. He had an uncanny ability to understand the emotions of others — to see people for who they were and offer his own gentle strength in return. His smile could light up the darkest room. His laughter was pure magic. And though words fall short in capturing the essence of Oz, those who knew him knew how special he was. The bond he shared with his parents, and his beloved family was unshakable — rooted in joy, loyalty, and an abiding sense of togetherness.
Ozrael was strong-willed in the best way — comically stubborn, incredibly intuitive, and full of curiosity. He approached life with open arms and taught his family lessons they never expected to learn from someone so young. Most of all, he taught them resilience. Even in the face of a long and difficult fight with cancer, Oz rarely let the hard moments dim his spirit. He met each day — even the hardest ones — with a smile, a sparkle in his eye, and a strength that inspired everyone around him.
In October 2024, Oz completed his final treatments, and for a precious stretch of time, he was free to simply be a child again. He ran, played, and laughed without limitation. He lived joyfully. One of the most beautiful memories from that time was a family trip to Humboldt County, California. There, Ozrael saw the ocean for the first time. True to form, he didn’t hesitate — he ran straight into the waves, made sand angels in the tidepool, and embraced the moment with all the wonder and courage that defined his life.
Oz loved superheroes — especially Spiderman, Deadpool, and a good Hulk Smash. In February 2025, surrounded by friends and community, Ozrael was honored with a Super Hero Party at Lorados, where he met his favorite version of Spiderman — the real one, in Oz’s eyes. That day, he was the star, the hero, the joy — just as he was every day to his family.
Ozrael’s celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at The Music Man Square, 308 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City. All who knew and loved Oz are welcome to attend and share in remembering the remarkable child who gave so much to this world.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oz’s GoFundMe to support his family during this time of deep loss.
Though Oz’s time with us was short, his spirit was enormous. He lived bravely. He loved deeply. And he will be remembered always — not just for the battles he fought, but for the life he lived with joy, humor, and love beyond measure. He will forever be loved by his parents, Dave Guerrero and Whittney Hubert and their families, the Guerrero, Hubert, and Pringle families.
He is joined in Heaven by his grandpa, Jose Mercedes Guerrero; and great grandparents, Jose and Ignacia Guerrero, Susan Beth Pringle, Phyllis Marie Stock, and Donald Robert Hubert.
We are deeply grateful to Stead Family Children’s Hospital for the incredible care, love, and compassion they gave Oz throughout his journey.
Thank you to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for giving us hope through your clinical trial and for your unwavering support.
To the many people Oz touched along the way — thank you. Your support, love, and connection to his story meant more than words can say. Oz inspired so many, and his light will continue to shine.
