WAVERLY – A Waverly man was charged with a crime after the car he was driving ran over a man who was lying in the road, then left the scene of the accident.
On December 15, 2019 at approximately 1:00 AM, the Waverly Police Department responded to the 300 block of 2nd Street SE, Waverly, IA in reference to an individual lying in the roadway. The individual was unable to correspond at the time, but officers were able to identify him as David Schmalz of Waverly. Evidence suggested that Schmalz was run over while lying in the roadway. The Waverly Police Department rendered aid and Schmalz was transferred to the Waverly Health Center by the Waverly Ambulance Service.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that 23-year-old Michael Yeatman Jr. of Waverly was traveling on 2nd Street SE when he ran over Schmalz. Yeatman did not observe Schmalz lying in the roadway prior to striking him. Yeatman stopped the vehicle and a passenger called 911 for assistance. The passenger stayed on the scene until the Waverly Police Department arrived, but Yeatman did leave the scene. Michael Yeatman Jr. was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident in violation of Iowa Code 321.263(1), a serious misdemeanor).
Yeatman was booked and released to the Bremer County Jail.
