KELLOGG, IOWA — An Iowa man is in custody at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility after authorities said a dog was abused, shot in the head and later died from its injuries.
Kerry Jake Quick, 32, was sentenced in Jasper County District Court on November 10, 2025, after pleading guilty to animal abuse, an aggravated misdemeanor, and dominion or control of a firearm or offensive weapon by a felon, a class D felony.
The case began on July 6, 2025, when the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office received a report of someone actively abusing a dog at 304 East Street in Kellogg. Deputies were also told that a gunshot had been heard at the scene.
When deputies arrived, they found the injured dog and contacted the residents, identified by the sheriff’s office as Quick and Justice Goodwin, 28. Authorities said the dog was taken by Jasper County Animal Control to an area veterinarian for treatment of head injuries initially believed to have been caused by a blunt object.
The sheriff’s office later released an update saying the dog had died from its injuries and that X-rays showed the animal had been shot in the head.
Deputies obtained a search warrant for the residence. The sheriff’s office said the search led to the discovery of a firearm, drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Court records show Quick pleaded guilty in November to animal abuse and to being a felon in control of a firearm. He was sentenced to two years in prison on the animal abuse conviction and five years in prison on the firearm conviction. The sentences were ordered to run concurrently, meaning at the same time.
Quick was also fined $855 in the animal abuse case and $1,025 in the firearm case. A reckless use of a firearm charge and a controlled substance charge were dismissed by the court as part of the case resolution.
As of January 8, 2026, at 12:19 p.m. CST, Quick’s custody status was listed as “in custody,” with a custody detail showing he was being held at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility.
Goodwin was also charged after the initial investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
