MASON CITY – Authorities say an errant candle caused a kitchen fire inside a Mason City house, sending occupants fleeing.

Mason City Fire Chief Jamey Medlin says that on Monday, October 14, 2024, at 11:38 AM, the Mason City Fire Department responded to a house fire at 422 29th Street SW. Fire crews arrived to find light smoke venting from the structure. The fire was located in the kitchen.

Crews extinguished the fire quickly and performed overhaul to prevent fire extension.

All occupants escaped the house prior to the fire department’s arrival on scene.

An investigation of the fire revealed that it was accidental, caused by a candle.

The Mason City Fire Department remained on scene until 12:55 p.m. and was assisted by the Mason City Police Department and Alliant Energy.

Records show the house is owned by Jeffrey L. Baker, Jr.
