MASON CITY – Mason City City Council member Don Nelson will be a write-in candidate for the Mason City Parks and Recreation Board.
Nelson, who currently serves on the City Council as the third ward representative, said in a news release that he decided to be a write-in candidate after “thoughtful consideration.”
Nelson says that in 2006, working with fellow councilman Jeff Marsters, he started the successful Volunteer Park Watch Program to prevent vandalism in the city’s parks with little to no cost to taxpayers.
Nelson also said that “the past 12 years being on the Mason City City Council has provided me the opportunity to make reasonable, sound, and positive contributions to the Parks and Recreation Board.”
Nelson listed his past record of serving Mason City.
– 12 years on City Council
– 12 years serving on Mason City Civil Service Commission
– 6 years on Good Shepherd Health Center Board of Directors
– 3 years on the North Iowa Corridor / EDC Commission
– 9 years on the Iowa Games Board of Directors
– 19.5 years as Executive Director of the Mason City YMCA
– 4 years as a Park Watch volunteer
The Parks and Recreation Board is a volunteer board with no pay.
The election will be held November 8th.
