MASON CITY – A threat to shoot at a Mason City school prompted police and school officials to take action to keep the community safe.
On Friday morning, October 4, 2024, Mason City High School officials contacted the Mason City Police Department about a social media post regarding a school shooting threat at the high school “during 2-3 period.” The original post was from SnapChat.
MCPD immediately contacted state and federal partners about the threat. Police learned that this post surfaced on October 3, elsewhere in North Iowa. Authorities were already aware of it and investigating the threat.
As such, police explained there was no credible threat to students, staff, or the community at this time in Mason City.
Police thanked the local students and parents who sent this to MCHS school officials.
“Their prompt call to MCPD allowed us to quickly follow-up on this post and gather additional information from the Fusion Center. We appreciate the working relationship that we have with MCCSD as we work to keep students and staff safe at school,” police elaborated.
Anyone with information about this post can contact the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3000.
