Vandalism spree in small Iowa town lands juvies with felony charges

MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA – A vandalism spree in this small Iowa town landed a handful of juvies with felony charges, police say.

On May 5, 2021, the Mt. Pleasant Police Department began to receive numerous calls of criminal mischief in the Central Park square area from businesses. Police say it appears that some individuals gained access to roof tops and damaged property and threw stuff down to the street area causing a lot of damage to businesses. There was also damage done to storefronts with items located outside those businesses. The first reported damage was observed at 3:36 AM. It is believed the other damage was done prior to this. Police sought input and video from the public to ascertain the identity of the culprits.

As a result of help from the public, three male juveniles were caught and charged in connection with this incident, police say. The ages of the suspects are 14, 14 and 12. They will face class D criminal mischief charges. Allegedly, police say, one of the juveniles threatened to blow up a police officer’s home and shoot up a school. That youngster will face charges of threats of terrorism and harassment.
