The correctional officer was working at his post when an inmate approached him. Without warning, the inmate began striking the officer with a series closed fist strikes. Additional officers quickly responded to the assault and took control of the situation.
Those involved in the assault were assessed by facility medical staff. The officer that was assaulted was taken by state vehicle to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City to be assessed for injuries to his face. The inmate did not suffer serious injuries.
This incident remains under investigation.
