RURAL MASON CITY – A Britt man taken by ambulance to the hospital after an accident outside Mason City.

On Friday, July 13, 2018 at approximately 11:37 AM, Cerro Gordo County Sheriffs Deputies were dispatched to an injury accident at Highway 122 and Jonquil Ave. A 2014 Chrysler Town & Country Van driven by Nadine Drennan, age 80, of Clear Lake was eastbound on Highway 122 and turned north onto Jonquil Avenue when she pulled into the path of a westbound 2005 Jeep Liberty driven by Santiago Aguilar, age 64, of Britt, IA. The vehicles collided and the Jeep Liberty ended up on its side in the ditch. Aguilar was trapped in the vehicle and was extricated by the Clear Lake Fire Department. Mr. Aguilar was transported to Mercy Hospital by the Clear Lake Fire Medics. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

Drennan said in the presence of an NIT reporter, “I pulled out (from Jonquil) and thought I had time. I was being cautious and was surprised that he hit me.”

The accident remains under investigation at this time.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Clear Lake Police Department, Clear Lake Fire Medics, Clear Fire Department, and Iowa State Patrol.

  1. Age is irrelevant. It is the physical and cognitive skills that need to be considered. Families need to step up and when people start to lose those skills they need to have an open and honest discussion with their loved ones. If you would not ride with someone, then they should not be driving.

  2. I was being cautious and was surprised that he hit me.

by the looks of the van, she hit him. 80 and probably shouldn’t be driving. bet she thinks it was his fault.

    1. I want to see you say that 80 is too old to drive when you’re 80! At least today’s 80 year olds aren’t texting behind the wheel.

      1. I see so many close calls with elderly drivers. Not saying texting isn’t a issue as well but the number of old people almost killing people just because theyre oblivious to their surroundings ls unreal. Theyre on par with drunk drivers. Honestly id rather ride with a intoxicated person than my grandma

        1. Grandma doesn’t want to ride with someone as ignorant as you anyway. Older people are just like other drivers, some are good, some are O.K. and a few are bad.
