CLEAR LAKE – The Surf Ballroom has been nominated as one of Iowa’s top attraactions, along with some state parks and other popular destinations.
Clear Lake’s iconic Surf Ballroom has been picked as a “best Iowa attraction” by USA TODAY for their 10Best Readers’ Choice contest that is underway now. It has been the scene of countless performances by some of music’s best acts over the years. The contest’s leaderboard shows the Surf in 5th place at this time out of 20 choices.
Also on the list are two Northern Iowa state parks.
Maquoketa Caves, in Jackson County, has more caves to explore than any other state park in Iowa, giving visitors a chance to step back in geologic time. Pikes Peak, in Clayton County, is known for its spectacular views of the Upper Midwest and the mighty Mississippi River, particularly during peak fall color.
“There is no doubt, these are two very popular parks,” says Todd Coffelt, DNR State Parks bureau chief. “And I’m sure this competition will be hotly contested, particularly among the local communities that are such great supporters of these state parks.”
USA Today describes the choices for Iowa’s best destination as “Germany colonies, covered bridges, college towns and some of the nation’s most productive farms – this is Iowa. Attractions here are diverse, everything from movie sites and trucking museums to burial mounds and scenic drives along the Mighty Mississippi. What’s your favorite?”
The 10Best Readers” Choice contest ends Aug. 28. Voting is done online at www.10best.com/awards/
