DES MOINES – Yesterday, at a campaign rally in Cedar Rapids, President Donald Trump allegedly attacked a key source of Iowa’s energy and economic growth, saying, “I don’t want to just hope the wind blows to light up your homes and your factories.”
Andy McGuire, a Democratic candidate for Iowa Governor reacted today, saying, “Simply put – Donald Trump’s attack on wind is an attack on Iowa’s economy. Iowa wind energy is absolutely critical to growing our economy and creating good paying jobs. It accounts for 37% of all energy generated in the state – ranking first in the nation.
“The energy generated through wind in Iowa is enough to power nearly 2 million U.S. households. How dare President Trump come to Iowa and denigrate our great people-powered wind energy companies. Here in Iowa, we’re proud of the steps we’ve made towards a clean energy economy. Thousands of Iowans are employed producing and servicing wind turbines. Last night, Donald Trump once again targeted a critical industry that is vital to our state and the people who live here.”
“As Governor, I will bolster the progress we’ve made as a leader in wind energy, and I will fight to ensure that our state eventually transitions to 100% clean renewable energy produced right here in Iowa. And, when President Trump makes reckless comments that target Iowans, I will never hesitate to hold him accountable. On this issue, Donald Trump sounds like a typical Washington politician—full of hot air and no clue what he’s talking about. Attacking hardworking Iowans might be the Washington way, but it is certainly not the Iowa way.”
