WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump today says he will slap a big tariff on Mexican imports to pay for a wall along the southern border of the United States.
“The U.S. has a 60 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico,” the President said. “It has been a one-sided deal from the beginning of NAFTA with massive numbers of jobs and companies lost.”
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said that $10 billion could be raised on the proposed 20% tax on Mexican imported goods.
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto cancelled a planned visit with President Trump after a plan to build the controversial wall was announced Wednesday.
Mr. Trump was not deterred, saying “If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting.”
