MASON CITY – A man allegedly stole from a convenience store and then came back and refused to leave, before stealing a flatbed truck and leading cops on round-trip chase that ended back where it started.
Just before 4:00 PM, police were summoned to the Kum & Go Central convenience store located at 418 South Federal Avenue. A male subject – identified as 27-year-old Andrew Meyer of Mason City – was in the store and refused to leave. An employee told place that Meyer had stolen from he store earlier and needed police to come immediately.
Moments later, police say, Meyer stole a flatbed pickup truck from the parking lot that had been left running, and headed north from that location. A witness followed, and helped give directions to the police dispatcher, which allowed police to eventually locate the truck, which was owned by Katz Towing. The truck drove east along the Canadian Pacific tracks and then south on Carolina Avenue. Officers observed the truck on Kentucky Avenue and 35th Street SW as it turned to head east. Officers then pursued, but Meyer refused to stop. He drove back to Kum & Go Central, where he was arrested at about 4:19 PM.
Meyer was arrested on charges of operating without owner’s consent, driving while barred, eluding, reckless driving, theft in the fifth degree, failure to yield to a traffic control device, and trespassing. He is being held in the county jail on $5,000 bond.
