WATERLOO — A Northern Iowa motorcyclist was killed this week in Waterloo when the bike crashed into a median.

The fatal crash happened at approximately 3:47 PM on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, on Sergeant Road, also known as Highway 63, near Freedom Lane in Waterloo. The deceased has been identified as 43-year-old Marcus Porter of Waterloo, according to police.

Waterloo police said Black Hawk County Consolidated Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a motorcycle crash at that location. When officers arrived, they found that the male rider had been separated from the motorcycle during the crash.

Porter was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the preliminary investigation, Porter was traveling northbound on Sergeant Road on a green 2001 Kawasaki ZX900 motorcycle when the motorcycle left the roadway, entered the shoulder and crashed into the median.

Police released Porter’s identity in a July 3 update.

The crash remains under investigation by the Waterloo Police Department.

The fatal crash comes as Iowa has recorded 139 traffic fatalities so far in 2026, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s daily traffic fatality count. The DOT notes recent fatality totals are preliminary and can change as crash investigations are completed.
