MASON CITY – A lady and her three sons, riding their bikes along the north/south railroad tracks by the Ray Rorick Skate Park near Big Blue, reported a grass fire Saturday afternoon.

The Mason City Police Department responded to the call. They requested fire extinguishers. A train was sitting on the tracks, making access for a fire truck impossible.

The fire was put out. A second fire was noticed up the pathway, into the woody tree area. Fire fighters and police officers took more extinguishers and shovels to put the second on out. They continued to look for more trouble spots.

On a related note, per Fire Marshal Mark Christiansen, the “red flag” fire conditions warning was recently lifted for the Mason City area.

However, there is still a ban on open burning in Cerro Gordo County.  City code prohibits open burning within city limits at all times. Recreational and camp fires are exempt from both the open burning ban in the county and the open burning laws in the City.

A fire was extinguished by Mason City emergency responders next to a trail by Big Blue in Mason City on Saturday.
