MASON CITY – Mason City citizens looking to dispose of excess and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications can now visit the safe and secure permanent drop box in the lobby of the Mason City Police Department.

The police department has joined in this program in order to provide a safe, secure and environmentally friendly way to help the public in disposing of unwanted or expired medication, including prescriptions, over-the counter drugs and unused pharmaceuticals. The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department has been providing this service for the past couple years. The Mason City Police Department’s participation will help to provide an additional location for residents which may offer better convenience.

Properly disposing of excess drugs is a matter of public safety and now the citizens of Mason City will have greater opportunity to take advantage of this program. Drugs can be dropped off no questions asked. The collection site will be open when the police department lobby is open to the public, Mondays – Fridays, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Those items acceptable for drop off include prescription pills, patches and ointments, over-the-counter medication, vitamins, samples and even medicine for your pets. Unacceptable for drop off would be any liquids (i.e., hydrogen peroxide, cough medicines), any sharps/needles, inhalers and any aerosol cans.
