SIOUX CITY – A man who escaped from federal custody was sentenced on May 8, 2014, to 14 months in federal prison.
Jose Osoria-Mendez, age 22, from Spencer, Iowa, received the prison term after a February 19, 2014, guilty plea to one count of escape from federal custody.
At the guilty plea, Osoria-Mendez admitted that on January 3, 2014, he left the Fort Dodge RRC on a work pass. Shortly thereafter, the facility was notified that the Global Positioning System (GPS) ankle bracelet that Osoria-Mendez was wearing had been tampered with. Fort Dodge RRC staff searched their facility and located the ankle bracelet, which had been cut off, but did not locate Osoria-Mendez.
Osoria-Mendez was located and arrested by the Jackson County, Minnesota Sheriff’s Office on January 5, 2014. Osoria-Mendez was serving the remainder of a 50 month sentence stemming from a conviction for armed bank robbery and theft of firearms from a federal firearms licensee in the United States District Court, District of Minnesota.
Osoria-Mendez was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Osoria-Mendez was sentenced to 14 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Osoria-Mendez is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin Fletcher and investigated by the United States Marshal Service.
