MASON CITY – Students at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) are taking steps to help the residents of North Iowa by sponsoring a Thanksgiving Food Drive. The food drive is being sponsored by NIACC Student Senate and College Entrepreneurial Organization (CEO) club. All food collected will be donated to the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank.

“Our goal is to raise awareness for the issues of hunger in our area,” said Kativa Eckholt, Information Officer for the NIACC Student Senate. Boxes decorated by the NIACC Student Senate and CEO Club will be placed around the NIACC campus for donations.

Students will also be available at Fareway in Mason City on Wednesday, November 6 from 4pm-7pm, Hy-Vee West in Mason City on Wednesday, November 6 from 4:30pm-6:30pm, and Hy-Vee East in Mason City on Thursday, November 7 from 4pm-7pm to accept non-perishable and monetary donations from the public.

Donated items that would be appreciated, include: instant potatoes; canned yams; canned cranberries; any canned vegetable; stuffing; evaporated milk; pumpkin pie mix; gravy mixes; dessert mixes; or any other non-perishable food item.

If you have any questions or would like to help with this project, please contact Lisa Jahnel, NIACC Student Senate Advisor, at 422-4419 or Tim Putnam, NIACC CEO Advisor, at 422-4192.

Reasons to donate to the food drive:

· September was another record month with 1,353 people being helped. That was 193 more than a year ago in September.

· Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank helped provide food and hope to nearly 15,000 children, seniors and adults last year.

· Every dollar equals three meals when the food bank is able to purchase that food from their state wide food bank. Last year the food bank provided 290,326 pounds of food, bread, baked goods and non-perishables. That helped provide 165,612 meals.
