The eyes of the world were on Washington this week. And while they witnessed a great deal of political discord, today they will also see Congress reach a historic, bipartisan agreement to reopen the government and avert a default on the nation’s bills. The compromise we reached will provide our economy with the stability it desperately needs.
It’s never easy for two sides at odds to reach consensus. After weeks spent facing off across a partisan divide that often seemed too wide to cross, our country came to the brink of a disaster. But in the end, political adversaries set aside their differences and disagreements to prevent that disaster.
I thank the Republican Leader, for his diligent efforts to reach this important agreement. The Republican Leader’s cooperation was essential to reaching an accord that could pass both chambers and be signed by President Obama.
As part of our agreement – and in order to assure Congress continues the work of setting this country on a path to fiscal sustainability – this legislation instructs leaders to name conferees to a budget conference committee. The members selected must have open minds willing to consider every option, no matter how painful to their own political party. This conference committee, led by Chairman Murray and Chairman Ryan, which will produce its negotiated budget resolution in December, is the appropriate place to discuss our differing views of the best way to chart a course for economic growth.
This legislation also funds the government through January 15 and averts default through February 7, during which time we can work towards a long-term budget agreement that prevents these frequent crises. And perhaps most importantly, this legislation ends a standoff that ground the work of Washington to a halt this fall.
I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and both sides of the Capitol to pass this remarkable agreement, which will protect the long-term health of our economy avert a default on our nation’s debt and allow us to set a foundation for economic expansion.
We have sent a message to Americans from every state and citizens of every country that the United States lives up to its obligations. Now Congress must return to its most important job – fostering economic growth and protecting middle-class families.
I appreciate the stead hand of President Obama through this process, guiding us to this conclusion. And I am optimistic that the spirit of compromise that has taken root in the Senate over the last two days will endure.
Very Interesting Video about Dylan Rayigan on MSNBC yesterday. I was very surprised at his comments. His belief is that our problems in this country are the direct result of a corrupt president, congress, bank system and tax laws. What he said made a lot of sense. As long as we have a congress that is bought and paid for by special interest and a president that has the same problems we will continue to fight this fight.
Absolutely taking up space on earth that an honest private employee should have – Hollowwienie.
Here is something the Slimeball Reid didn’t tell you. The so called “Clean Bill” had 3 BILLION that is billion with a “B” of add on spending hidden in it put in there by Democrats. So much for controlling spending. We can’t keep our parks open or pay for VA benefits, but can spend 3 billion dollars on stuff they could not get passed through regular methods. It is no wonder this country is going to hell with people like that in out government.
Here are the big pork winners… http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/17/politics/new-debt-deal-pork/index.html?iid=article_sidebar
After reading this article I would say there is NO winners.

@maybe-Now that article I can believe.
@DR Dunn-The only Republican name I saw was McConnel and they said he didn’t push for it. It wouldn’t surprise me that he received a kickback for caving in but he wasn’t the one who put it in. Other than that, my statement stands. Thank you for the article though. I heard it ion ABC news this morning.
according to this article the big winner in this seems to be Kentucky. A very red state
@DR Dunn-agreed. That is what the article said, but it also said McConnel was not the one who pushed for it. It was a payoff.
DR Dunn, I can agree with you on one thing, this dam project should have never been slipped into this bill, just like the other things slipped into it. I have always said, if a project has merit, let it pass on it’s own. Also, by law, all spending bills must start in the House of representatives. In the case of Obamacare, that didn’t happen either. (Another reason it is not constitutional.)
Back to the Dam on the Ohio River in Kentucky, that project was already under construction by the Army corp and these are cost over run costs, another thing I don’t agree with on these things. I say if you bid it, don’t come back later and ask for more because you didn’t expect this or that. Live by the original bid.
Only hope is a revolution, it is getting closer. You look at how our US of A was set up, nobody is guarenteed anything but a right to pursuit of happiness, ect. Democraps keep shaking down us that has to pay but you just wait they will get theirs you bet they will. Time to shake out them that takes our money and hands it over to the leaches. Obama knows this, thats why he wants to take our guns and he is ordering all these ammo buy’s.
@Joe Dirt-A socialist is just one step up from a communist. He is a progressive which is two steps DOWN from a communist.
The principles in which this country was founded have a eroded to sickening levels.
kicked the can down the road again
Who does this puke think he is fooling. Were still 17 trillion dollars in debt. Obama scare is just coming to light how again us who are willing to get up and go to work are getting screwed with higher premiums and less coverage to support the deadbeat nation. And the Biggest insult congress and the president refuse to go on the same plan they forced on us. I used to say this guy is a Socialist but am beginning to believe he is more of a Communist. Another sad day for working America and it will all happen again in three months.
