STORM LAKE – Iowa law enforcement raced to the scene of a crime that turned out to be a hoax call.

On Saturday, June 1, around 6:55 PM, the Storm Lake Police Department responded to 120 Highway Street on a report of an armed barricaded individual who claimed to have committed a shooting. Officers secured a perimeter around the apartment complex and began the process of evacuating the area to ensure everyone’s safety.

The Storm Lake Police Department Entry Team, alongside our partnering agencies, worked to clear the scene by 9:00 PM. Upon investigation, officers determined that the apartment in question was unoccupied with no evidence of any crime having occurred.

“We have determined that this incident was a hoax,” police proclaimed. “There was no threat to the public.

“We understand the anxiety and fear such false reports can cause, and we want to reassure you that we are continuing our investigation into this matter to hold those responsible accountable.

“We want to thank the members of the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, and the Storm Lake Fire Department for their assistance during the incident.”
