Mason City Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan workshops to be held in July

colorful bikeMason City, Iowa – The Mason City Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan project continues this summer with two neighborhood workshops to help design a bicycle and pedestrian transportation system for Mason City.

Workshops focused on the southeast and southwest quadrants of the city will be held July 9 and 10. “Like the workshops we held in June for the Northeast and Northwest quadrants, these meetings will be hands-on, interactive workshops where participants will help to guide the completion of the Mason City Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan,” said Steven Van Steenhuyse, Director of Development Services. “We want to find out where people like to bike or walk, but we also want to hear from those who would bike or walk more often if there were safe and convenient routes for them to use. Citizens who live south of Highway 122 are invited to help us plan a non-motorized transportation system that serves people of all ages, interests and abilities.”

Those who live in the southwest quadrant, south of Highway 122 and west of Federal Avenue, are invited to Rolling Acres Church, 340 20th St SW, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, July 9. The southeast quadrant workshop, for those living south of Highway 122 and east of Federal Avenue, will be held on Wednesday, July 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at First Covenant Church, 411 S. Ohio Avenue (corner of South Ohio and 4th Street SE). If you are unable to attend the workshop for your quadrant, you are welcome to attend the other.

There will be future events related to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan project. Updated information will provided on the project website, www.activatemasoncity.com.

Citizens are also encouraged, if they have not already done so, to take the Bicycle and Pedestrian survey. The deadline to complete the survey has been extended to July 30. Just go to www.activatemasoncity.com and click on “Take a Survey.” It only takes a few minutes. “We’ve extended the survey deadline to encourage more participation,” said Van Steenhuyse. “Although we have had a good response so far, the more participation we have, the easier it will be to craft a plan that meets the needs of Mason City.” For those without computer access, call the Development Services Department at 421-3626 and a paper survey will be mailed to you.

WE NEED A LANE FOR BIKES LIKE CLEAR LAKE

What the hell is wrong with using the streets and sidewalks like we always have?

Good idea. I ride my bike to work a lot.
