Humane Society creates “Giving Tree” to encourage donations

Humane Society of North Iowa supporter Gretchen Thomas from Clear Lake collected all the items on a tag from the “Giving Tree” at shelter recently.  The donations are being put to good use by the Humane Society of North Iowa.

MASON CITY – The Humane Society of North Iowa has decorated and set up a “Giving Tree” in the lobby of the shelter this week.  The “Giving Tree” is decorated with paper tags that list several high demand items the shelter needs donated this time of year.  The Humane Society of North Iowa hopes that supporters will remove a tag from the tree, purchase one or more of the items and bring them back to the shelter as donations.

“The Humane Society of North Iowa relies on a lot of donated supplies to provide care to the animals and to run our shelter,” explained Executive Director Sybil Soukup.  “Some of the supplies on the list are needed for the animals and some are needed for our volunteers and staff, but all are used to help us reduce our expenses and allows us to devote more funds directly towards animal care.”

The list of items included on the “Giving Tree” include: Purina™  brand Kitten and Adult Dog Chow, dish soap and hand soap, toilet paper, and 13 and 30 gallon garbage bags.

“Monetary donations to help offset our expenses are very much appreciated,” concluded Soukup, “as are donations of time; we rely on and appreciate volunteers that come to the shelter to walk and socialize the animals and encourage others to do the same.”

The Humane Society of North Iowa is a non-profit organization that serves a 9 county area in North Iowa and operates a no-kill rescue animal shelter in Mason City.  In the past 25 years, HSNI has found loving homes for over 7000 abandoned, displaced, and neglected animals. The HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES (HSUS) is a political organization. The Humane Society of North Iowa is not affiliated with them. Our local HSNI relies on donations of cash and supplies from individuals and businesses to rescue pets. Please do not spread the rumor that our local organization is political. You have the two organizations’ missions confused.

LVS how am I not being truthful. I didn’t bring up Kiungs name. I responded to the one who did. duh. I’m only pointing out that HUMANE SOCIETY OF NORTH IOWA is ONLY asking for DONATIONS of SUPPLIES. NOT VOTES. duuh again. I’m an idiot? Yeah sure I’m an idiot because I know the difference between HSNI and HSUS which you don’t. HSNI is the VOICE in NI for DOGS & CATS people abandon. YOU want to make it personal & political & take it to another level and are spiting the animals. And YOU call yourself an animal lover me an idiot?! LOL!

Well animal lover, you just showed your true agenda! You indeed do support National Humane Society. I guess for you as well, its not all about the animals

Yeah sure I go out and march in the streets and carry signs. Sometimes I wear my dog or cat outfit. I organize protests and plan to picket King’s house. But 1st I think I’ll feed the stray dogs & cats in NI. k?

Yes indeed. I do seem to remember this organization spending millions to try to defeat Steve King and elect Vilsak. That makes them a political organization in my book. I love animals (especially dogs) but can not and will not give anything to an organization the lies about their goals. They take the money to support animals and use it for political reasons.

LVS you must drink tea! The DOGS & CATS and EMPLOYEES of NI Humane Society are NOT to blame for what the NATIONAL HUMANE S does. Why are you making the local HS responsible? You DON”T care about the strays the local HS helps or you wouldn’t be so snarky. You’d put aside your hatred for the USHS and sake of the animals. I will be generously helping those who TRUELY care about animals which bottom line is helping the ANIMALS.

@animal lover-How can you call yourself that when you obviously are not being truthfull. I was pretty much raised on farms back in the day when they still had farm animals and where we treated them decently they were still animals. I loved my dogs and would never hurt an animal unnecessarily and I certainly do not need a lecture from a idiot like you.

the smear of a good man , Steve King
Now live with it, or in my case, without it!

Your “good man” is a racist. He also thinks immigrants should be sorted out like “puppies in a litter”. Meaning only the best should be allowed into the US. How is that representing America? What does it say on the Statue of Liberty? Give us your masses! King should have been ousted just for his hidden racist views. Wonder where he keeps his hood…..good man……HAH!

you should have stayed out of the CV – King race. Not only you got in it but you went with the loser.

*Perceived* Sorry, typing on tablet.

Im very proud to donate money & supplies to them. Whoever can & doesnt because of political crap cant be peeceived as a good person. Those pets need us & anything we can do to help them.

Agree MrsS. Some people can’t see past their hypocritical political nose. They’re so spiteful it’s sickening.

After finding out they are LITTLE more than a political organization. NOT 1 RED CENT!!

What do you mean, they are a political organization?

NIHS rescues dogs & cats. Tho they support legislation for propeer treatment of ALL animals they don’t march for less legislation for confinement hogs, chickens etc.. Where are the politics in RESCUEING and FEEDING and FINDING loving CARING homes for strays IDIOTS dump?
