Fireworks celebrate nation’s birthday in Mason City

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – The annual fireworks show was held Tuesday night in Mason City at the North Iowa Events Center.

Folks packed into the I-35 raceway stadium to observe the traditional show.  People also parked in nearby parking lots and as far away as the Cinema West parking lot to get a peek.

“I thought they were ‘OK’ ,” one man said.  “The finale was the best part.”

At 8:15 PM, patriots were already choosing their favorite spot to watch from. They were lined up to get into the Grandstands, sitting on lawn chairs in the parking lots, and even found space in front of businesses on Highway 122.

They were not only out there early to get their seat, but to enjoy some of the traditional vendors of Fourth of July food. There were funnel cakes, Perry’s Sweet Treat Ice Cream truck and Susie Q’s famous tenderloins.

Shiann Kraft, with her mother Allison, were heading to Susie Q. “I want some munchies,” said little Shiann. Allison giggled and said, “She going to get a corn dog and cheese balls.” They were excited for the firework festivities to begin, with Shiann holding tightly to her flag. They came down from the Joice area for the entertainment.

Sponsored by The Exchange Club of Mason City, the fireworks started shortly after ten o’clock and lasted thirty to forty minutes. There were many cars from out of state and from all over Iowa attending the firework display.

Fireworks are scheduled for tonight in Clear Lake and Charles City.
