MASON CITY – The City of Mason City will be collecting large items year round. Sanitation customers are able to schedule an appointment to have large items collected on their regular sanitation collection day. Citizens are asked to make the appointment at least one week in advance of the desired large item collection date. The definition of large item includes those objects not normally collected by the City on regular sanitation routes. A list of the large items and the number of stickers necessary for each item is listed below.

The large item collection by appointment occurs on the sanitation collection day for that particular quadrant of the community. For example, if you live in the 2nd Ward, or the NW Quadrant of the community, you would schedule an appointment for a Tuesday, which is your normal date for sanitation collection.

Once the appointment is made with City sanitation staff, customers are asked to place their large items at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the appointed collection day. Residents need not be present for collection of the large items.

Sanitation stickers are required to be attached to all large items.  Stickers cost $1.00 each and are available in sheets of five at most grocery stores and at City Hall.

In general, the following number of stickers must be attached to the respective or similar items:

13 Pianos, large appliances such as stoves, refrigerators (IMPORTANT: doors must be removed), water heaters, trash compactors, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, washers, dryers, freezers, furnaces, televisions, computer monitors, and microwaves

5               Upholstered furniture such as sofas, chairs, and carpet

4 Copy machines, fax machines, and any other items with toner cartridges

3 Sinks, tubs, and toilets

1               Tables and chairs

Small appliances such as radios

Mattresses and box springs

Grills

Bicycles

Old construction material

Humidifiers

All other electronics, including computer towers, etc.

If you have questions about the number of stickers necessary for collection of large items, please contact City Sanitation staff at (641) 421-3691.

Customers are encouraged to write their address on the face of each sticker to prevent unauthorized removal. Wherever possible, loop stickers through or around openings so that the end of the stickers adhere together. Do not place stickers on electrical cords.

The City is not responsible for lost or stolen stickers.

Customers are reminded not to place items in cardboard boxes because it is recyclable and is not accepted at the landfill. Old construction material must be bundled and weigh under 50 pounds per bundle or bag. Smaller items must be bundled or bagged. Loose small items will not be picked up.

This pickup is for Mason City Sanitation regular customers only.  No businesses will be included.

Items that will not be picked up include: new construction material, oil, paints, solvents, gasoline, vehicle batteries, gas tanks, tires, household chemicals, toxic items, fuels, and pesticides. These materials can be dropped off at the landfill at no cost to residential customers. Drop off of these items are by appointment only. Call the landfill first at (877) 526-3345 to set up an appointment time and date.
