MASON CITY – Mason City Fire Chief Bob Platts confirmed Tuesday that authorities are investigating an incident on the city’s north side that could involve arson.
The Mason City Fire Department was called to 802 North Monroe on Monday July, 2nd at 12:25 AM.

“Fire had already been extinguished by the two male occupants of the house when we arrived. On a window of the glass patio door our crew saw that the words ‘You will burn’ were written in green marker,” Platts said.
Platts said the Mason City Police were called due to the nature of the fire.
“Because of the arson we called in the Mason City Police Department to investigate and the investigation is on going by their department,” he said. Mason City police so far have had no comment.
Neighbors have seen fire trucks at the residence at least twice recently. “I noticed them there Monday night, but didn’t think anything of it,” a man said. “I feel sorry for the (African American) guys that live over there.”
A knock on the door at 802 North Monroe wasn’t answered.
One man who lives nearby said “there is a lot of strange activity on that side of the street,” referring to the west side of the 800 block of North Monroe Ave. “There are drug dealers over there, people outside smoking weed and people living behind the houses in a trailer. People move in and out all the time.”
