Iowa man dead in two-car, head-on collision

JASPER COUNTY - An Iowa man is dead after an opposing driver crossed a highway center line and collided with his vehicle head-on.

JASPER COUNTY – An Iowa man is dead after an opposing driver crossed a highway center line and collided with his vehicle head-on.

At 11:29 AM on July 24, 2024, Jasper County Sheriffs Office received a call of a motor vehicle accident, involving 2 vehicles, in the 5100 block of S-74 S. Information was that the accident was a head on collision.

Jasper County Sheriffs Office, Newton PD, Jasper County Emergency Paramedics, Jasper County Emergency Management staff, responded to the scene of the accident. The County highway was closed due to the roadway being blocked from the accident and remained closed until approximately 3 PM.

Driver of one vehicle: Karl Peters, age 62, from the Monroe area was operating a motor vehicle south bound on the county road S-74 S.

Driver of second Vehicle: Michael Croy, age 41, from the Des Moines area was operating a motor vehicle north bound on the county road S-74 S.

For unknown reasons, at the time, the Croy vehicle went left of center and struck the Peters vehicle head on.

Peters vehicle came to rest in the west ditch and the Croy vehicle came to rest on the roadway.

The Iowa State Patrol was contacted to assist the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office with the accident investigation by providing a Technical Accident Investigator.

Michael Croy was pronounced dead at the scene. Karl Peters suffered minor injuries from the accident.

Jasper County Roads department assisted with closing the roadway during the investigation. This accident remains under investigation.
