Iowa Crafts: 41 Exhibition to open at the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum

MASON CITY – Iowa Crafts: 41 opens on Friday, December 6 at the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum in Mason City. This diverse exhibition is the result of a statewide crafts competition held by the Museum featuring creative works by Iowa artists.

An opening artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, December 7, beginning at 2 p.m. with an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend and to meet the artists represented. The juror for Iowa Crafts: 41 is Zachary Schnock. Schnock is the Gallery Director at the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery on the campus of Wartburg College.

The competition for this exhibition was open to all residents of Iowa above high school age. Entry categories were clay, fiber, metal/wood, jewelry, and other craft media. The purpose of the exhibition is to provide the public with further enriching arts experiences and to promote interest in and recognition of the accomplishments of Iowa artists.

Forty-four artworks by thirty-two artists were selected for the exhibition ranging from long-time artists to students just starting their careers. A great diversity of entries including small-scale sculpture, basketry, handmade quilts, and pottery were chosen. Individual artists will be selected to receive awards for their works. These award winners will be announced at the opening reception on Saturday the December 7 at 2:30 p.m.

Iowa Crafts: 41 can be viewed in the Museum’s Kinney-Lindstrom Gallery through Saturday, March 1, 2014. Admission to the Museum is free. Museum hours are Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sundays – Mondays Closed.
