iowa-dot-logo-2014AMES – Light snow, coupled with strong winds in Iowa are expected to make travel conditions difficult throughout the afternoon and evening Sunday. Blustery conditions will be followed by bitter cold for the entire state through Tuesday.

The Iowa Department of Transportation reminds travelers that blowing snow can greatly reduce visibility and cause periods of white out conditions. If you experience reduced visibility while driving, you are urged to pull off the roadway at the nearest safe location and wait to travel until conditions have improved.

Extreme cold can affect vehicle function. Be sure to travel with a full tank of gas and pack a winter survival kit. If you become stranded, it is safest to remain with your vehicle.

Motorists are urged to evaluate the need to travel in extreme conditions. If you must travel, be sure to monitor road conditions and Iowa DOT snow plow locations by using the winter driving resources listed under the travel section of the Iowa DOT website, http://www.iowadot.gov.
